That’s the view of ESPN FC pundit Steve Nicol. Mourinho is currently looking for his next role in management after being fired by Manchester United in December. The former FIFA World Coach of the Year was dismissed after a poor run of form, and was believed to have fallen out of favour with many of the stars in the United dressing room. On Tuesday, he declared that in his time away from football he has already rejected three or four job offers because he wants to wait for a job that he knows he wants. He had been linked with a return to Real Madrid following a bad spell for Santiago Solari, but Zinedine Zidane was brought back to the Bernabeu instead. And Nicol believes that the moment his career began to go south was during his ill-fated time in Madrid. Mourinho had won the La Liga title in his second year in the Spanish capital, along with a Copa del Rey in his debut season, but his third season in 2013 ended with his side 15 points behind league winners Barcelona. The 56-year-old then left the club with his relationship with his squad having soured. Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol analysed Mourinho’s chances of getting a new job and suggested that his first dressing room fall-out has left a lasting impression. He goes to Inter Milan and the players loved him, they were crying their eyes out when he left,” Nicol said. Then he goes to Real Madrid and it just fell apart halfway through, and it doesn’t seem to have recovered from there. This is based on halfway through his tenure at Real Madrid. “It was the first time he had fallen out with a team with the majority of the players, particularly the more experienced players. It all crumbled, and that’s why they let him go. “He didn’t speak to the press for three to six months in his last six months there, that shows how bad it was there. He moved on to Chelsea, started fine and then eventually the same thing happened, he fell out with all the players and it all fell apart. Then he went to Manchester United, the same thing again, starts well and everybody’s behind him, then all of a sudden the whole thing collapses and falls apart. I’m not so sure that this guy right now, with what he’s got going on in between his ears, is the great Jose Mourinho, it’s just a version of it for a period of time. I don’t see him getting another huge club job.” Get Chelsea latest news updates directly to your inbox Subscribe Thank you for subscribing.
