The UEFA Champions League returns with gameweek 3 of the group stage! Tonight we’re covering Manchester United as they host Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus at Old Trafford. We’ll also be giving you LIVE updates of all the other 8pm kick offs including Ajax vs Benfica, Hoffenheim vs Lyon, Real Madrid vs Viktoria Plzen, Roma vs CSKA Moscow and Shakhtar Donetsk vs Man City.

Manchester United have had an inconsistent start to the season, impressive second half fight backs against Newcastle United and Chelsea seems to signal a change in fortunes for Jose Mourinho but domestic losses to Brighton, Spurs and West Ham are still fresh in fans’ memories. In the Champions League a similar story persists, with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Young Boys in Bern followed by a lacklustre 0-0 at home to Valencia. A big test at home to Juventus could come at the right moment for Mourinho’s men, with a lack of motivation and passion reasons for the Red Devils’ poor start to the season. Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata have all be key to United’s recent resurgence and it will be interesting to see if they can continue their good form against the Old Lady.

Unlike Manchester United, Juventus have been unbelievably consistent, winning their first 10 games and keeping 6 clean sheets in that time, however they did drop their first points of the weekend in a 1-1 draw at home to 9th placed Genoa. Potential injuries to Sami Khedira and Emre Can mean that Juve could have to move away from a 3-man midfield that has offered them stability and control so far this season. However Cristiano Ronaldo’s return from suspension plus Paulo Dybala’s recovery from an injury suffered on International duty will hardly please Jose Mourinho. The return of Juventus’ star players to the Old Lady’s already formidable lineup including the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Alex Sandro Blaise Matuidi, Miralem Pjanic and Mario Madzukic could spell disaster for Manchester United.

Despite this, Manchester United are unbeaten in the past 4 meetings between the sides, winning the last 3 including the 1999 semi final second leg en route to completing a historic treble. The return of Cristiano Ronaldo will prime the Old Trafford faithful for an electric atmosphere. As well as Ronaldo, Paul Pogba faces his former club so it will be interesting to see the performance level of such a world class potential player who struggles with consistency. Combine atmosphere with United’s biggest test of the season so far and you’d expect a Jose Mourinho counter attacking masterclass incoming.

The clash is the biggest in Group H and one would expect the match to befit the occasion.
